We’re proud to announce that AlertMedia was recently named as one of the top 10 Internet-of-Things (IoT) start-ups to watch by Network World. The term “Internet-of-Things” refers to the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these objects to connect and exchange data.

Communication and the Internet-of-Things

Communication is the glue that ties all of the “things” together in the Internet-of-Things, so we have a very unique role to play. Many start-ups in this category might help these “things” communicate with each other, but AlertMedia takes the next step to help these things communicate with decision-makers and response teams.

For example, we helped a large restaurant chain monitor the temperatures in its refrigeration systems, alerting staff when temperatures fall outside an acceptable range. This solution has saved this restaurant countless man-hours in monitoring costs and a lot of money in spoilage.

According to Network World, IoT devices “often run on woefully out-of-date software that must be manually patched and upgraded.” This poses a significant challenge to enterprise organizations, which continuously face threats to their people, their assets, and their operations. When an incident occurs, every second of reaction and response becomes critical to minimizing the loss.

Delayed awareness and slow response time can be costly in terms of production, profitability, reputation, and the health and safety of employees. Organizations are dependent upon humans to notice critical situations, sometimes long after they happen, and then manually broadcast relevant information to the right people.

The author was also impressed with how we helped a large grocery chain monitor the proximity of delivery vehicles to delivery locations. This grocery chain is using AlertMedia to systematically coordinate the arrival of their vehicles by triggering notifications to loading dock personnel. This saves them hundreds of thousands of dollars in wasted labor costs per year.
