There was a time when wildfire season belonged to a handful of places: California, Australia, and parts of Canada (mainly). People elsewhere rarely viewed smoke or evacuations as a concern.
That assumption is becoming harder to defend.
Longer dry spells, recurring heatwaves, and increasingly volatile fire conditions are expanding the geography (and the consequences) of wildfires. Even organizations located hundreds of miles from active flames are contending with degraded air quality, disrupted travel, displaced employees, and supply chain interruptions. Smoke has become an operational hazard in its own right, capable of affecting communities far beyond the fireline.
One crisis, multiple continents
Although separated by thousands of miles, the fires burning across Europe and the western United States are being driven by many of the same conditions: prolonged heat, dry vegetation, low humidity, and strong winds. Those ingredients have turned forests into tinderboxes and made small ignitions capable of growing into major incidents.
In France, firefighters continue battling large wildfires near Bordeaux and across the Gironde region after one of the country’s largest peacetime evacuation efforts forced residents and tourists from homes, campsites, and coastal communities. Officials have warned that persistent heat and dry conditions could allow existing fires to expand or new ones to ignite with little warning.
Spain is confronting a similar challenge. Multiple wildfires have prompted evacuations, road closures, and emergency response efforts across several regions, with European Union resources helping support local firefighters as conditions continue to evolve.
Across the Atlantic, the Pacific Northwest is also experiencing an active wildfire season. Fires burning in Washington and Oregon have produced hazardous smoke, disrupted recreation and transportation, and strained firefighting resources during another hot, dry summer. Even communities far from active flames have experienced deteriorating air quality as smoke drifts across the region.
The smoke doesn’t stop at the fireline
Wildfires rarely affect only the communities where flames are visible.
Smoke can travel thousands of miles, exposing people far outside evacuation zones to unhealthy air. Transportation corridors close, utility infrastructure becomes vulnerable, supply chains slow, and employees may be displaced from their homes while others continue working under hazardous outdoor conditions. What begins as a localized emergency can quickly become a regional operational challenge.
Why You Should Care: Wildfires are no longer isolated regional disasters. They are operational risks capable of disrupting employees, facilities, travel, supply chains, and business continuity across multiple locations simultaneously.
For organizations with distributed workforces, that complexity requires more than monitoring fire perimeters. Leaders must also understand where employees live, how smoke may affect outdoor work, whether travel plans will be disrupted, and how quickly conditions can change.
Organizations should review evacuation procedures, monitor both fire activity and air quality, establish clear multichannel communication plans, and ensure employees know how they will receive updates before conditions deteriorate. |
